Salome (2008)

It was a shocking experience when I watched Salome in my first year of university. A western performing art classic, yet an unconventional drama full of sexuality and violence. While the play is a hundred years old, the depiction of the internal corruption of Salome is completely avant-garde.

The assignment is to redesign a logo for Vancouver Opera and to rebrand Salome into a contemporary avant-garde drama. I begin the search for the image of my Salome—mysterious and sexual, anti-constructivist yet a sacrifice to the social system. Eventually I found a back shot image of a long haired woman. While it fits all my criteria, it also provides room to question the character of the subject—which is the key to Strauss’s classic.
